What Could Continued Lightheadedness, Off Balance, Weakness And Reduced Appetite Indicate?

Nine days ago I started feeling very lightheaded. I went to the doctor to find out my blood pressure was pretty high. I was prescribed some medicine. The lightheadedness has not gone away. My blood pressure has went down. But this is the ninth day straight of being very lightheaded. I feel off balance, weak, and don t have much of an appetite. I am also somewhat dehydrated. I am not nauseous or have any headaches. I am forcing myself to eat and drinking a lot of water which pretty much runs right through me. I am also not congested. I have went to the er 3 times because of the bad lightheadedness and all they came up with is possibly a sinus infection, possibly a virus, and anxiety. Any clearer opinions of what could be going on would be appreciated.

Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

This kind of feeling could have been due to the high blood pressure you had, and it might take some more time for your body to get adjusted to the present blood pressure with medications. Your body might also take some time to adjust to the effects of medications you have started. All these factors might cause your present symptoms, which might pass off gradually.

However, if the symptoms persist or increase, and if I were your treating doctor, I would go for a detailed blood investigations of yours including Hb%, serum lipid profile, kidney function tests, and a blood sugar estimation. I would not hesitate to go for an MRI of head, and other cardiological tests including a carotid dopler on consultation with a cardiologist. The management would depend on the results of these investigations, and if all are normal, a change in your present blood medications might solve the problem.

I would take this opportunity to suggest to go for some kind of aerobic exercises within your medical capability and to avoid too much of fried oily food, and go for more of roughage like vegetables and fruits, with sufficient liquids.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in solving this problem. Thanks for using the healthcare magic forum for your health query. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
