What Could Be The Reason For Swelling And Discoloration Under Nail Years After Falling From Stairs?

Hi, I fell about 3 years ago down some stairs. My big toe hurt really bad for a while and was swollen and blue/purple under the nail. The pain went away but it is still swollen and discolored. The nail is also very thick now. Just curious if you have any suggestions on why it hasn't returned to normal.

Hello and welcome to HCM,

I understood your concern about the thickened and discolored toe nail. Post trauma nail can undergo changes, called onychogryphosis due to injury to matrix, or can get fungal infection, known as onychomycosis because the injury loosens the nail and allows organism to grow inside.

To differentiate between the two , see a dermatologist and get a nail clipping test for fungus done, and get oral antifungals prescribed.

Hope I was able to answer your question
