Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance is the term used when the cells seen on pap smear are not normal but not clearly precancerous. Precancerous means that cancer is not present at the moment but based on appearance, there is a risk of cancer occurring.
This means no definite cancer cells were seen but the cells were unusual in appearance.

The options would be to repeat the test in 1 yr or have testing for the HPV virus.
