What Causes Tickling Sensation In The Lungs And Persistent Cough?

I've had a sore throat for 10 days now. Also, I've had a peristent, nagging cough for the last week now. I get very little sleep, as I constantly have a tickling sensation in my bronchus/upper lung, which drives me crazy 24 hours per day! I can not go very long without coughing, which only gives a very temporary relief, before the tickling starts again. I've been hacking up dark green sputum, sometimes bloody at night, from excessive coughing, which may be due to irritated throat tissue? It is also painful when I cough at the bottom of my throat and in the top of my lungs. Often when I cough, i get a sharp pain in my head just above my right eye. Also my ribs are quite sore from all the coughing. Went to hospital and got on Penicillin 6 days ago. Has not helped at all. This bug is likely a virus. Can't go on like this much longer and am punch drunk from lack of sleep. Is it possible that I have pneumonia? Is there anything that I can do to suppress the tickling sensation in my lung?

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
By your history and description, possibility of post infectious bronchitis is more.
Pneumonia can also be the cause. Both these cause similar symptoms.
And he both are common after viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI).
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done
1. Clinical examination of respiratory system
2. PFT (Pulmonary Function Test)
3. Chest x ray.
PFT is must for the diagnosis of bronchitis.
Chest x ray is needed to rule pneumonia.
You may need inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).
Don't worry, you will be alright. First diagnose yourself and then start appropriate treatment.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
