What Causes The Smell Of Burnt Sugar In The Nose?

I have not had a very good sense of smell for several years now but in the past five days I ve had the smell of burnt sugar/caramel/honey in my nose. I can smell some other things when I deliberately inhale them but this sugary sort of smell persists. I don t have a cold but have been feeling run down the past few weeks. Any clues will be appreciated. I am 45, otherwise healthy. 160 cm tall, just on 70kgs. family history of heart disease but no diabetes or cancer on either side. I had my gall bladder removed in 2004.
