What Causes Swelling And Widening Of Tongue?

Hello-

Last year I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. My tongue is very wide and large and difficult to keep inside my mouth. When I close my mouth I can feel my tongue and the roof of my mouth, often there are teeth marks on the sides of my teeth and this has been going on for some years now. My question is are there any endocrine disorders that can cause this widening and of the tongue? i.e. hormonal imbalances, deficiencies, etc.?

Thanks,

JK

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms Swollen tongue can be due to a number of common causes of which Hypothyroidism is one of a most probable cause.
Other causes can be Vitamin B12 deficiency, allergies, oral infections etc.

If you want to know about hormonal causes there are some like it can be due to overproduction of Growth Hormone, Hypothyroidism and disorders related to Pitutary Gland.

You should consult an ENDOCRINOLOGIST and get evaluated and get a complete hormonal profile done and treatment can be done after a confirmatory diagnosis is made.
It should be taken care of as in a few cases tongue malignancy can also cause chronic swollen tongue.

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
