What Causes Stool To Become Hard Ball Size After Taking Antibiotic?

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here...I took an antibiotic for three weeks. My stool became hard ball size. I have been off the antibiotic for one week. My stool is the same. I am 72 years ild and my bowel movements have always been good and regular every morning. Thanks.

Hi.

Thanks for your query.

Noted the history and understood the concerns. Antibiotics can change the bacterial flora in colon which has many important functions. Hence it is possible that the function of your colon has changed to the extent that there is more absorption of fluids from the colon causing the stools to become hard ball size.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Take plenty of oral fluids.
Stool softener and laxatives.
Get an x-ray of the abdomen to see for fecoliths and enema if required to evacuate the colon.
All these should help to solve the problem.
