What Causes Sore Throat?

I had a sharp sore throat about a month and a half ago that when it went away, left a sensation of me feeling like I had a hair stuck in the back of my throat (no pain, just bothersome). The feeling gradually went way and I forgot about it until about three days ago when the sensation came back. I got a flashlight and looked in a mirror and from what I can see is my right tonsil is larger than my left one. It isn't painful, it's just bothersome. Should I be worried?

Hi,
Welcome to healthcare magic

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.Sore throat is most commonly caused by an viral infection which is also associated with cold, fever and weakness. It is usually an episode which lasts for about 1 week and passes away.

In my opinion, slight enlargement of the right tonsil might be due a mild tonsillar infection for which 1 week course of antibiotic like tab.Augmentin might be sufficient.I suggest if the size is not reducing in a week after the course of antibiotic and particularly if the right tonsil is increasing in size with a hard feeling get it checked by an ENT specialist for asking his expert opinion about getting a biopsy of the tonsil done. For now, there is nothing much to worry about.

Meanwhile following certain habits will help you in cure:

1. Drink warm water and do gargling by mixing warm water with salt 3-4 times a day ,if throat pain persists you can buy tantum gargles(combination of antiseptic and anesthetic)/ betadine gargles.

2. Avoid unhealthy, oily and cold foodstuffs.

3. Eat well to avoid feeling weak and to improve your immunity.

Kindly rate my answer if you find it useful. Feel free to ask any queries.Take care.
