What Causes Severe Neck Pain And Headaches Having A History Of Meningitis?

My husband complained of severe neck pain. He had spiral meningitis as a child and was worried. He also had a headache and asked for aspirin. He has analgesic on his neck, plus an ice pack. His temp is only 97.8. He is now sleeping. What should I do?

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully read your question and would explain that his complaints don't seem to be related to his past medical history for meningitis.

You should know that recurrent meningitis is rare, only when anatomical defects like dural layers tearing are present.

His symptoms may be related to chronic degeneration of cervical column or an infection.

I recommend consulting with his doctor for a careful physical exam and some tests:

- a cervical column X ray study
- some blood lab tests (complete blood count, inflammation tests).

The fact that painkillers have been effective, and no other symptoms (like fever, nausea, vomiting) are present, means that there is nothing to worry about.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!
Best wishes,
Dr. Aida
