What Causes Severe Back Pain That Spreads Down To Legs?

I have severe back pain on my right side that shoots down to my leg. At times it feels as if my back locks and I can t move and then a sharp sudden pain. The pain lasts all day long and I don t know what to do. I have heated and iced my back. Ice works best but only gives relief for a very short time. I am a full time mom and take care of my sick mom 24/7, so walking is very limited or any other exercise. Except for cleaning and taking care of my mom. I also realized or feel I have hemorrohoids.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be due to:

1. Para-spinal muscle spasm & entrapment of nerve fibers at the Lumbosacral region or lower limbs.
2. Any fluctuation in blood pressure or blood sugar levels.
3. Dietary deficiencies of certain nutrients like Iron, Calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin B 12, Folic acid, etc. which help in blood formation & nerve conduction.

Symptomatic relief can be obtained by intake of nervigenic agents (like Vitamin B6, Vitamin B 12, Folic acid) as well as multivitamin & multimineral supplements including iron, calcium & Vitamin D needs to be added in your diet.
Physiotherapy & postural exercise will also be helpful.

If symptoms still persist, kindly consult a Neurologist & get a complete Neurological examination done.
Certain investigations like complete blood count, serum electrolyte estimation, fresh estimation of blood pressure & blood sugar levels, lipid profile, thyroid profile & nerve conduction studies will be helpful to rule out any pathological cause for the symptoms.

Regarding the problem of hemorrhoids, you need to consult your Doctor for clinical examination & Proctoscopy.
Further management plan can be decided based on the findings.

Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care.
