What Causes Light Spotting During Periods?

I have been on my period for two days now but i am only spotting. Im usually a heavy bleeder by now but so far only spotting. I am sexually active but me and my partner use condoms each time. Im not on any birth control shot yet or pill. Should i be worried about pregnancy?

Hi,

Some amount of irregularity can be seen during the periods and menstrual flow due to different causes. Premenstrual spotting can be seen in some women due to fluctuation of the reproductive hormone levels during the premenstrual period. Usually this premenstrual spotting will get converted into menstrual flow.

Compare with other contraceptive measures the success rate of barrier contraceptives like condoms is low. It ranges from 72 to 82%. So as you are not using any other contraceptive method the possibility of pregnancy cannot be completely ruled out. So if you want to be sure regarding the pregnancy, please go for a blood test for pregnancy, which can give more accurate result compared with a urine pregnancy test.

If the serum beta HCG levels in the blood test are less than 5 mIU/mL, that rules out the possibility of pregnancy. If the test gives a negative result, you can wait for a few more days and possibly by that time you may get your regular menstrual flow. If the spotting repeats in next menstrual cycles, better to get evaluated by consulting your gynecologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
