What Causes Irregular Bowels And Vomiting In An Infant?

My 18 month son seems like he has been sick for months with irregular bowel movements and vomiting. He has numerous ear infections which i assume is normal being in daycare. He has had a cough for at least 6 months and his urine has a different odor as well as his stomach being very bloated. What is happening?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
There are numerous causes of chronic cough. Here are some:
- passive smoking of tobacco or cannabis
-postnasal discharge from a cold; no cough when up and about, but coughs continually when he lies down
-enlarged adenoids and nasal infection; if a child has a postnasal obstruction and a postnasal discharge, with nasal speech and recurrent middle ear infections, the diagnosis could possibly be enlarged adenoids
-cystic fibrosis is accompanied by cough and pneumonia, failure to thrive, and loose, greasy stools
-acid reflux
-a foreign body(such as a peanut) in the lung

I am not sure what you mean by "irregular" bowel movements, but if your son received an antibiotic each time he was diagnosed with ear infection, then this could cause vomiting and diarrhea.
Urine can have several different kinds of odors. It would be best to take a fresh specimen to his doctor to examine.
In an otherwise healthy infant an enlarged abdomen probably is a sign of a large amount of gas in his intestinal tract which will be expelled on it's own.
I hope this has been helpful. Please return if we can assist you again.
