What Causes Irregular Bleeding During Menstruation?

Hi Dr...My periods come regularly every month, but bleeding is only there for two days. I used to have bleeding for 5 to 6 days when i started having them, but then reduced to 3 to 4 days after delivery four years ago. I had a D&C in november for incomplete abortion following which periods didn t come for two months, my doc prescribed progesterone pills to start the periods and since then they are regular, but last only for two days. i am 29 years old now. Is there any problem, or is it natural?

Hallow Dear,

The reason for low bleeding seems to be associated with D&C and Progesterone pills.

During D&C, the lining of the uterus is scraped. If the lining gets scraped to quite an extent, the remaining lining (endometrium) is less and hence the bleeding is less.

In fact try to understand that the bleeding you get during the menstruation contains mainly the endometrium and some amount of blood (about just 38-40ml). Therefore lesser or thinner the endometrium, lesser is the bleeding.

Moreover, you are on Progesterone pills. Progesterone pills always reduces the amount of menstrual bleeding. Probably your doctor put you on the progesterone pills because you did not get the periods after abortion. Now if your bleeding has become so less after Progesterone pills, please discontinue the pills, you do not need them. If you want to be on birth control pills, you may please select balanced pills rather than Progesterone dominant pills. This will regularize your bleeding.

I am sure this guides you properly.
