What Causes Inflamed Turbinates And A Deviated Septum?

I have inflamed turbinates and a slightly deviated septum that I have been advised require surgery. I also suffer from a blocked feeling in my left ear (which is the side that the septum deviates toward & the turbinates are swollen on) and a swollen lymph node that comes up and down behind that same ear. The ENT has advised that the nasal/sinus issues could be causing the blocked feeling in my ear (like it always needs to pop), the swollen lymph node and that they could also contribute to sleeping problems I have by waking me up due to not enough airflow through the nasal passage. Does this sound likely?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
Read and understood your history of blocked nose and ear on the same side due to inflamed turbinates and deviated septum on the same side.

Since you have already consulted an ENT Surgeon, I can add on some important points that will help you and your Doctor to have a clinical trial for 3 weeks and then only to think of the Surgery.
These will be diagnostic as well as therapeutic in nature:
- First of all to get a CT scan of the sinuses and the nose to know the exact anatomy and to decided which are the sequel or complication that might have been cause by the above findings.
- Next step is to use Nasal as well as oral decongestant, followed by plan water steam inhalations. This will reduced the size of the turbinated and see how much has it affected positively by opening the nasal passages and ear bloackage.
- A course of an antibiotic and and anti-inflammatory medicines to contain the secondary infection if you have.
- Use of mild anti-anxiety measures, these do help for vasomotor part of this problem.

See the effects on opening of the nasal airways and then decide whether you need a surgery or not.

I hope this will give you and your Doctor the best inputs and then decide.
