Hi..I am having my TSH levels as 8.86 and my T3 as 2.5 and my T4 as 0.85 at my 9 weeks of pregnancy.I am suggested to use Thyroxine 25mg.Now I got tested at my 15th week again for TSH and it is still 8.86.Why it has not been reduced so far??Will it affect my baby? Will it lead to abortion?
TSH is a hormone made by the pituitary gland in the body that basically measures how hard your thyroid has to work to make thyroid hormone. A high level means that your thyroid gland has trouble making thyroid hormone.
However, the T4 level is the actual measurement of the thyroid hormone. If you are taking enough thyroid medication, the T4 may be normal, even though the TSH is high. The T4 is the part that crosses the placenta to the baby and is the important one to watch. The TSH takes time to readjust to the new level- it can even take 3-6 months.
So I do not know what the normal range is in your lab for T4 but as long as it is normal on the level of thyroxine you take everything will be fine.
I hope I answered your question and that this information was helpful. Best wishes for the ongoing pregnancy, Dr. Brown
