What Causes Heartburn?
I have been having GI issues for 7 weeks now. It started with LUQ pain(burning,aching, dull pain 5 out of 10) that radiated to my left shoulder. -29YO f, normal labs except TSH 14.0, normal EKG. Started taking zanac 150 BID. Saw MD was put on protonix 40mg QD then increased the dose because I had a bad night with 5 out 10 pain again. Pain was so bad I could not sleep. About 6 days after starting protonix I got nausea it lasted 1 week so bad I couldnt go to work. Went back to doctor and DC'd protonix and started prilosec 20mg BID and stopped zantac. I thought/think I may have a peptic ulcer. However my GP MD dose not agree because my H. Pylori came back negative. Nausea did go away a few days later. 11 days later I woke up with RUQ pain and went to urgent care again labs normal except WBC 10.4. Complete ABD US was normal. After eating the pain goes away. Since then I still have heartburn that wakes me up, bad taste in my mouth when I wake up from sleep, stomach burning/aching/dull pain that comes and goes, nausea that comes and goes.

Heartburn is actually a symptom of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), and is caused by acid refluxing back into the esophagus. Risk factors include those that increase the production of acid in the stomach, as well as structural problems that allow acid reflux into the esophagus.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter , the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), sometimes spreading to your throat, along with a sour taste in your mouth is the most common symptom. Antacids that neutralize stomach acid should be given. Medications to reduce acid production. Called H-2-receptor blockers can be use along with PPIs.
