What Causes Fast Heart Rate, chest Tightness And Numbness In Arms?

Every so often I get tightness in my chest along with numbness in my arms, racing heart, light headedness and some times I have to relax to breath. It happened twice today. Once after I lifted a heavy bag and the other time when I was getting a drink of water. The episodes usually last a few minutes. Laying down seems to help. What is going on?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Greetings. Welcome to HCM and thank you for your question. I understand your concern.

If you provided your age would help me a lot. Anyway, if you are more than 45 years old, these could be the first signs of cardiac ischemia. In the moment we stand, I only have your symptoms, so further tests are recommended. The symptoms, as you describe them, point to a possible angina. Angina is the pain or more like a tightness or heaviness in the mid-chest triggered by blockages in your coronary arteries. If you also have a family history of cardiovascular disease or sudden cardiac death, this increases the risk and suspicion that this is the case. However, a full cardiac check-up would be appropriate in your case. It should be started by a simple EKG to see and evaluate your heart electrical system, if there are acute or remote changes in it. Then, I would proceed with an echocardiogram, to evaluate the size, motility and function of heart chambers and valves. If seen appropriate by your cardiologist and if problems in the above mentioned tests found, I would recommend a cardiac stress test, to assess if there is a possible blockage or narrowing in a coronary artery. And if this test is back positive, I would recommend a coronary angiogram, to carefully judge about the possible culprit lesion in an artery, that is causing these symptoms.

I hope I was helpful with my answer. Take care.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
