What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing And A Hairy Tongue?

Hello. I am 33, 210 lbs and 6'2 tall. Approximately two months ago I was diagnosed with strep throat and was put on Penecillin. Took it faithfuly as prescribed by doctor. Throat still hurt afterwards, difficulty swallowing, felt like there were bumps on tongue towards back leading to middle of throat and when I ate there was a sensation that the food was not going down with ease; I would have to wash it down with a liquid. Went back to doctor and was given another kind of antibiotic-repeated the cycle and no change. Went back again and was given another antibiotic (arithromycin)-repeated cycle no change. Now, going on two months, my tongue appears hairy and ocassionally there is a white like film on the tongue. I think this is oral thrush but what explains the "bumps" feeling in throat? Is this also the oral thrush? Can it affect the esophugus/throat as well? Also, I smoked for seven years and quit two months ago and every morning am coughing up small amounts of phlegm, occassionaly feel short of breath and tight in chest (but not often). Is this normal or signs of some type of cancer? Thank you for your time.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain sore throat that does not subside with antibiotics and having obstructed feeling in throat can be due to either Laryngopharyngeal reflux also known as Silent reflux or can be due to acid reflux..
It can lead to sore throat and inflammation and swelling in throat can lead to feeling of obstruction in throat..
Phlegm formation or excessive mucous formation can also be due to acid reflux..
As you are taking antibiotics for long the white coating on tongue can be due to fungal infection known as Oral Thrush and it occurs when the good bacteria also gets damaged along with harmful one that is responsible for resisting infections in mouth and thus fungus proliferates..
I would suggest you to stop taking reckless intake of antibiotics and better consult a Gastro-enterologist and get evaluated and he can advise you investigations like Endoscopy, barium swallow etc done to rule out the exact cause of sore throat and obstruction in throat and treatment can be planned accordingly..
As of now do warm saline gargles..
If there is white coating on tongue you can gargle with Nystatin mouthwash, suck Clotrimazole lozenges and take plenty of yoghurt and garlic..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
