What Causes Cough And Sore Throat?

My dad is 58, and I ve recently got over a cold and I m 14. Now, my dad has just now began coughing, wheezing, and complaining about his throat being sore. He compared the pain to being stabbed in the throat with a knife...He is a chronic smoker but has been taking Chantix to help reduce it. It s been working well, but he still smokes daily, and he is now on his third week. His tonsils are mildly swollen and his uvula looks as if it s been busted some way. Literally one side of it is drooping and his tonsils AND his uvula are look really irritated because rather than being pink, they re nearly a bright red! My step mom and I are sure he should go to the Hospital, but is it really necessary? I definitely don t want him dying on me, so I really need to know now what is happening to him. :(

BRIEF ANSWER: TONSILLITIS/SORE THROAT..

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your query it seems that your father may be suffering from TONSILLITIS as it is associated with cold and wheezing it is more likely to be viral infection..

Smoking should be completely stopped as the cigarette smoke has several chemical agents that causes further irritation to tonsils as well as slows down the process of removal of foreign agents which is main irritating factor to tonsils..
Other thing is that the smoke along with heat adds up to the inflammation and slows down the healing process.

He should quit smoking completely and do warm saline gargles..

If there is severe pain and inflammation it can be relieved by taking painkillers like Ibuprofen or Paracetamol(if not allergic).

If there is congestion decongestants containing pseudoephadrine can be used..

Taking hot milk with a pinch of turmeric for three consecutive nights can be relieving..

Drink enough water to keep well hydrated..

AVOID SMOKING COMPLETELY..

If no improvement is seen in next 5 to 6 days he should see a doctor..

Hope your query is solved..

Thanks and regards..
