What Causes Cold With Brain Fog During Hypothyroidism?

I have had transient hypothyroidism. My taking iron for the last 3 months has made me feel normal again as my iron level was very low. However I haven't taken iron for two weeks. Today I have begun to get very cold and have had brain fog all day. It feels like my brain isn't waking up and I am having trouble functioning normally. Could it be the lack of iron again?

Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.

Your symptoms are unlikely to be due to low iron. Three months iron supplementation is adequate to replenish your iron stores in the body (unless your Haemoglobin was very low, in which case you would have either been offered IM/IV iron supplements or even blood transfusion). I would advise you to get your haemoglobin, MCV (Both can be checked in complete blood picture), ferritin and iron studies checked. If they are still low or below normal, you would need to continue with your iron supplements.

Your symptoms could be just you “feeling under the weather”. There is no specific reason - you may be having a subclinical infection or lack of sleep or stress etc. It should hopefully settle within a couple of days. If still persistent, kindly see your family physician.

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you
