What Causes Burning Sensation On Lower Leg?

Hi, I have a burning sensation on my right lower leg, not the calf or the shin but on the side... It starts on the outer leg and radiates to the front.. It feels like someone is pouring hot water on it or it is covered with a heating blanket. Its not constant but every now and then. Ever heard of that?

Hello

I have studied your case,

There may be possibility of chronic ischemia to limb due vascular occlusion.

Colour Doppler may help in diagnosis and 3 D CT angiography will give exact position of circulation to lower limb.

Due to long years of smoking can lead to such symptoms.

There are many medications to improve blood circulation like pentoxyphylline; you can start them consulting your doctor.

Consulting your doctor cellulitis can be confirmed, antibiotic can be changed to improve symptoms.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Mukesh Chugh's  Response
Hello
Thans for posting
The described symptoms are suggestive of neuropathy (disease of nerves).Although many medical conditions can cause burning feet, Diabetes is the most common cause leading to nerve damage that is neuropathy.
In neuropathy, the leg nerves tend to become damaged first, at their furthest ends in the feet. This leads to tingling and numbness in the feet as well.
Do you smoke and take alcohol because there consumption may lead to burning sensation.
Beside diabetes other common causes are-
Chronic kidney disease (uraemia)
Vitamin deficiency (vitamin B12 and occasionally vitamin B6)
Alcohol abuse
Low thyroid hormone levels
Common peroneal nerve entrappment

My advice for you would be get following blood test done to find out the cause -
Fasting and after meal(pp) blood sugar test, Urine routine and microscopic test, Thyroid profile, Level of vitamin B12,Blood urea and serum creatinine level. Beside these blood test you need a physical examination so it is my advice to visit a local doctor.
Take care
Regards
Dr.chugh
