after running 8k a day 20 days in a row I found that in this last week I have blood in my urine what is this due to, i believe it has something to due with flapping of the bladder and prostate how do I fix this but continue to run long distances
Hi. Any amount of blood in urine needs evaluation to rule out various causes like stone disease, urinary infection or specially to rule out malignancy. You must get urine routine and culture and ultrasound KUB done to rule out urinary infection and stone disease. If suspicious, u may also require cystoscopy to rule out bladder malignancy. When all these causes of hematuria have been ruled out, we can conclude running being the cause of hematuria. The reason for exercise induced hematuria is not known but may be due to dehydration, red blood cells break down (foot strike hemolysis), or exercise induced increased permeability of glomerulus to rbcs, or bladder trauma secondary to empty bladder wall slapping against each other. Exercise induced trauma could be prevented by avoiding to void at least 20 minutes before running and absolutely it is not of much concern if it occurs. Just try to avoid running for sometime if it occurs. As such there is no treatment.
