What Causes An Overactive Thyroid?

Hi,

I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid 2 weeks ago. I have never had any health problems but suddenly last month i got nearly all the symptoms of an overactive thyroid. My blood tests revealed my thyroxine levels were 100 and should be 10-20. I am now on 80mg of beta blockers once a day and 20mg carbimazole twice a day and seeing a consultant next week. I had my 1st baby 9 moths ago. Do you think the cause could be having my baby as there is no history of overactive thyroid in my family. Will it return to normal as i want to start trying for another baby in a couple of months.

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
I read carefully your concern and understood your query.
There are many causes of hyperthyroidism or over active thyroid in postpartum period.
-Postpartum thyroiditis is the main cause, usually the overactive phase lasts a few weeks/months and is substituted by under active phase.
-Graves' disease and nodular goiter would be other common causes.
Pregnancy is not recommended without having confirmed normal level of thyroid hormones and usually it takes some months to be stabilized.
