OBGYN, Gynecologic Oncology 's  Response
Hi,

In a hysterectomy, after removing the uterus the top of the vagina is stitched to close. As healing occurs, the cells die, slough and are shed. This can show up as a greenish coloured discharge. It usually becomes less over time and settles down in 3-4 weeks time.

It is important not to use any tampon and resort to good personal hygiene practices. Another reason for this could be a post operative infection.

This is more likely to happen if you have other conditions such as diabetes that reduce your immunity (resistance to infection).

It is important to check on this and take antibiotics as soon as possible because in post-op period any infection can become widespread quickly.

So, I suggest that you say your gynaecologist who can examine, take swabs, arrange blood tests to rule out infection and prescribe antibiotics as and if required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Sabina Hussain
