What Causes A Dark Brown Clot After Intercourse?

Hello, I had a hystetoscopy on 7/14/14 to remove my Mirena IUD, I have been having regular intercourse with my husband since about a wk after the procedure, I have not had a period or any type of bleeding since the 28th of July, last night after intercourse I went to the restroom and when I wiped there was a dark brown clot, accompanied by thick mucus, today I have light pink discharge also accompanied with thick mucus, I have also been urinating very frequently as well as having cramps, is this the norm, I had the Mirena for almost 8 yrs and did not have a period with it, I would think that if I was having a true period it would be much heavier and darker red!

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

The Mirena IUD keeps you from menstruating because the local effect of the hormone in the device suppresses the growth of the endometrium. The endometrium is the lining that a shed every month during menstruation.

What concerns me, however is the fact that you began having intercourse within a week of your hysteroscopy. At that time, your uterus may have still been dilated from the procedure, which put you at risk for infection. The bleeding that you had after intercourse may not have been your period at all, but actually bleeding from your cervix from trauma during intercourse.

Because you also exhibit symptoms of a possible urinary tract infection, I suggest that you see your GYN doctor back for evaluation. You may need antibiotic treatment evaluation if he or she suspects infection.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that this advice was helpful. Again I want to reemphasize that I do recommend a medical evaluation for your symptoms.

Best wishes, and I hope you feel better,

Dr. Brown
