Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I read recently of a heart defect in babies that is often misdiagnosed as acid reflux, and when left untreated can cause death within a year. One of the symptoms that differs between the two is sweating and breathlessness during nursing. It goes by a five or six-letter acronym that I recall began with the letter A for arterial (?)... Any clarification?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The symptoms of breathlessness and sweating occur when babies are in heart failure. Newborns with heart defects can turn blue and breathe rapidly. With acid reflux the infant is more likely to cry as acid comes into esophagus. And to cough also as milk gets into the lungs.
I hope I have been helpful to you.
Please return when you have more questions.
