Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

When she falls unconscious does she pull her hair?

Part of the description provided by you is suggestive of seizures. But if she pulls her hair or talks abnormally during the period a seizure mimic should be ruled out.

Marriage is not a treatment for any medical illness and further evaluation of your sister is required.

You should consult a psychiatrist for the same.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

Psychiatrist Dr. Shreyas Pendharkar's  Response
Hi. Can you elaborate whether during these episodes, your sister ever had frothing from mouth, falls, body injuries or urination? secondly whether she had any such episodes during night time or when left unattended? based on provided information, your sister appears to be suffering from dissociative disorder. This requires counselling sessions from a Psychiatrist to discuss conflicts, stress or any other factors troubling her. Counselling sessions can lead to near complete resolution of this problem & medicines will only act as helpful aides & they are not the primary mode of treatment in this case. But first we need to have her brain scan CT/MRI brain & EEG to rule out any seizure like activity & then we can proceed for psychological interventions. For the time being, whenever she suffers from a similar episode, family members should ensure her safety but they need not panic. She would mostly recover by herself within a few minutes without any extra attention or family help. Regards

Psychiatrist Dr. Anjana Rao Kavoor's  Response
Hi Hamza

At the outset, i would like to tell you that your sister is NOT being possessed by 'Jins' and marriage is surely NOT the treatment for her ailments.

From what you have written, it appears that your sister is suffering from what is known as dissociative disorders. Its a rubric term, and the points favouring this diagnosis in your account include an emotional stressors immediately preceding such incidents and then apparently purposeful abnormal behaviours. However, a seizure disorder is a close diagnosis, if such behaviours are stereotyped, that is if they occur exactly in the same way every time and in the same sequence.
If they are seizures, she will need antiepileptic drugs. If they are dissociative attacks, she would be helped by a psychiatric consultation, medications and psychotherapies.

If such facilities are sparse in Afghanistan, you can get in touch with insitutes like Kabul university and get to their medical institute for they might have a functional psychiatry unit.

Hope this helps.
Regards
