Taking Cyclosporine Long-term For Itching Bumps. Worried About Side Effects

I've been taking cyclosporine 100 mg daily for five years which was recommended by a dermatologist here in Miami and also up at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.MN. It's the only thing that alleviates my psoriasis ie multiple itching bumps. I have a "renegade T cell problem" and this anti-immune drug is the only thing that helps. My kidneys and liver readings are OK, but I worry re: side effects. I've tried to stop the drug and hope that the body somehow "fixes itself, but the longest I've been able to go is about a week without taking the cyclosporine. I'm 77....6ft....183 pounds

General & Family Physician Dr. Lohit K's  Response
Hi, Thanks for using HCM.
Cyclosporin is an immunosupressant drug comes under calcineurin inhibitor. It is not curative for psoriasis. So if you stop relapse occurs. Dose you are using is 100 mg so the adverse effects are milder. Since it alleviates your problem and is effective, you should be aware of its possible side effects and drug interactions to avoid those drugs like aminoglycoside antibiotics, NSAIDS etc. Keep looking your renal and hepatic function tests as these are the major limitations. If any abnormal then consult your doctor. Also keep monitoring BP, sugar levels. Consult your doctor for further management.
Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Regards
Dr. Lohit
