Suggest Treatment For Vaginal Itch And Soreness After Protected Intercourse

Hi, I had sex with my fiance a couple of night ago. First time that night the condom was well lubricated, the second condom dried out faster. Afterward my vagina felt very sensitive and now I have a red rash on my vagina and it itches, but when I itch it also is sore. Help!!!

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Women can have skin sensitivities to two different ingredients in condoms; the latex it is made out of (whish is a very common allergy) or to the spermicide in the condom. In addition, most "lubricated" condoms really do not have enough lubrication to be comfortable. Furthermore, the spermicide in the condom can also kill healthy bacteria and predispose you to a yeast infection.

So I recommend purchasing an over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream (used for itching on other parts of the body) and applying that a couple times a day. Just a warning- if you have scratched the area raw- the cream may sting at first... that is normal. You can also apply ice packs to the area. If you start to have any abnormal discharge, an over-the-counter product for yeast infections may be worth trying as well. And also try using a supplemental lubricant on the outside of the condom if it starts to feel dry. This will reduce your risk of chafing. You should refrain from further sexual activity until you feel better.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful. Please do see a GYN doctor for an evaluation if you try these treatments and after a week do not feel better.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
