Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter s had a fever since Friday. It comes and goes however on Monday it would not let down. We finally took her to the hospital and they told us she has the Flu. They perscribed Tamiflu however advised that it may not work because it had to be administered 48hrs after the first symptoms. It is now Wednesday and she continues to have high fevers of 100 in addition to stomach pains, coughing, sneezing, runny nose and eyes, and purpulish lips? Is this the common flu? Should i take her to the hospital again?
I have gone through your question and understand your concern. It would have been more easy for me if you have mentioned age of child and all the advised treatment. However the symptoms described are compatible with diagnosis of Flu. Usually the symptoms severity last for first week while fatigue can last longer. Yes, best results of Tamiflu are achieved if given within 48 hours of onset of disease. Complications are common in very young children and elderly. But it should be continued as prescribed by your physician. I would advise to start Paracetamol as it diminishes the severity of symptoms. But the mainstay of treatment is rest, plenty of fluids and avoid contact with other people if possible. If the symptoms worsen, or are prolonged than a week than its necessary to visit the hospital again. You child give yearly flu vaccine to your child to prevent this problem again. May your child be blessed with health.
