Suggest Treatment For Severe Nosebleeding

My mom has been having severe nosebleeds for the past week..She s been hospitalized twice and released both times..She was returned yesterday due to the blood escaping from not only her nose but her ears, eyes and mouth. They claim they cant find the cause. Nobody bleeds like this normally. What could be wrong?

Otolaryngologist / ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

Before answering your concern, Can I presume that all investigations were normal while she was admitted twice in a hospital? There are so many causes for nose bleeds.

Commonest are:

1. Hypertension
2. Traumatic
3. deficiency of clotting factors
4. Drug like aspirin, warfarine etc.
5. Mass within nose
6. Non-specific, nor-organic

General advise:

1. Keep records of BP at home, at least three times in a day to observe any shoots

2. measure BP as soon as she has episodes of nasal bleeds

3. Home remedy in an emergency you may try (may not always work however) - keep head under cold water tap for 2-3 min

4. Good protein rich diets with vitamin supplemets esp, vit-C and K

Next Step- Find the cause

1. Visit an ENT Specialist - through clinical examination, nasal endoscopy
2. Imaging of nose and paranasal sinuses
3. Blood investigation like, CBC, co-agulation profile etc. as suggested by your physician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
