Suggest Treatment For Ibs During Pregnancy?

Hi. My wife is pregnant in the first trimester (btwn 10-12 weeks). She s been diagnosed with IBS, which started a couple years ago somewhile after our first newborn, so she gets stomach pain and irritation now and then, but she s grown used to handling it and avoiding its causes. However, she has for a couple of days now been feeling a different kind of pain, below the stomach in the groin area. We re going to pay a visit to the Doctor to check it out, but we ve got a few weeks old sample urine test that had been conducted during our last routine pregnancy visit before she ever felt this new pain. The readings show (++) epithelial cells, and pus in 5 - 7 range. Is it inicative of any kind of infection or problem?

Hi,
IBS is a disorder causing irritability of small & large intestine. In pregnancy it may get reduced / increased according to hormonal changes in pregnancy. It can be managed well by changing diet/ less FODMAP ( fermented, oligosaccharides, diasaccharides, Monossacharides and polysaccharides )diet, adjusting fibers according to symptoms/Exercises/ avoiding stress/ and use of medicines as per doctors advise,.
- It's good that your wifw has learnt to manage IBS with lifestyle changes. She should not have any problem during pregnancy.
- Point of confusion is when there is acute abdominal pain.. it can be confused with Uterine pain in pregnancy. In such a case Uterine pain differs from IBS pain in
having tightening of uterus/ increased vaginal discharge/ it comes in a wave fashion( comes, gets extreme pain & disappears to come after some time again.
It's better to consult a gynecologist in such a case.
- Urine with epithelial cells & 5-7 pus cells .. are not confirmatory of urine infection. It has to be co related clinically & supported by urine culture, if your doctor thinks it so.
Thanks.
