Suggest Treatment For Bladder And Urinary Infections

My husband has enlarged prostate and takes Tamsulosin 0.3 mg (Flomax). He was having lots of bladder or urinary infections before he started the medicine. He also has some tumors in the kidneys that his urologist keeps check on, and has been wanting him to have anther fish test, which he had one in 2012. He has had a melanoma on his face and they found another cancer under it (some kind of carsanoma). His father had one kidney (the other shrunk up pin a ball) and his grandmother died from cancer that I believe began in her kidney. Recently he went back for a checkup and his urologist told him he had found a pathologist that took BlueCross Blueshield of MS and it came back normal. BlueCross Blueshield denied the claim because they said it was not medicaly necessary. Do you think with his history and family history it was medically necessary?

Hello,

Well, recurrent UTI may be very difficult to treat since some resistant bacterias may be present.

It also indicates a few things: possible cause to be incontinence, evacuation or inappropriate antibiotics therapy.

2. If Prostate problems are present, then incomplete evacuation will lead to residual urine, which can get infected, and results in recurring infection.

Correction of prostate problems along with plenty of fluids and cranberry juice will reduce recurring infection.

3. If urine culture and sensitivity was not done before identifying appropriate antibiotics, then it's necessary. Do get this test done. Along with the above correction and appropriate antibiotics, infection is easily treatable.

4. More fluids along with cranberry juice will help in removing of infection through urine.

If any catheter is being used, it needs to be removed to avoid another source of entry of infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
