Suggest Treatment For Alcohol Addiction

Hello Doctor Hebbar,

I wanted you guidance towards my Husband who is 30Years of age and completely alcohol addicted.
I have married him since a Year now. I was not aware of the severarity of this addiction before marriage.
He will always search for a simple to simplest reason for going to have drink.
He will take the alcohol in empty stomach.
He will become violent after certain amount .
He drinks all variety of alcohol.
He starts screaming top of his voice whole night after he is out of control.
Worst case is many a times he has hurt himself in anger and also tried killing me with knife.
He is not ready to admit that he does all these things and has a problem with alcohol.
He will not remember at all what he did after drinking.
He will start staring at me and scolding with all dirty word and language.

I need a medicine which I can give him without his knowledge to reduce his curve toward alcohol. He is not ready himself for taking the treatment.
I would request to please help me with this and also guide me if even at this stage , if this can be treated.

Regards
Sweety

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi dear,

Thank you for your query.

First of all for de addiction motivation of patient is necessary.
So if pt is not motivated than you need to motivate him first for de-addiction.
Counsel him regarding the adverse effect of alcohol on self and family.
Once motivated admit in psychiatric nursing home as alcohol withdrawal symptoms are there once he quit.
There are many medicines for withdrawal like benzodiazepins like lorazepam, chlordiazepoxide, oxazepam etc.. also anti craving drugs like topiramate, acamprosate etc..

Treatment decide on liver function.
Also if still craving to take it aversion treatment also thee like disulfiram .

Consult local psychiatrist for detail treatment.
