Suggest Remedy For Severe Cough During Sixth Month Of Pregnancy

Hello! I am in the sixth month of pregnancy, and suffering from bad cough (started with sore throat and fever). My doctor has recommended Azibact 250 (Azithromycine salt) along with honey/gargles/steam etc, but nothing seems to help. I m also a bit worried about taking antibiotics at this stage. Please advice.

Hello and I hope I can help you today.

Azithromycin is an antibiotic that is safe to use at all points in pregnancy. However because your symptoms changed from a sore throat to a cough it is unlikely that your symptoms are due to a bacterial infection.

However, certain types of pneumonia are treatable by azithromycin. So I suggest you take the medication as prescribed by your doctor because it is safe for your baby, and will not hurt if you only have a viral illness.

Definitely continue conservative treatment like drinking lots of hot liquids, getting adequate rest, and keeping a healthy diet.

It is also safe to take over-the-counter cough suppressants during pregnancy.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes with the rest of the pregnancy, and I hope you feel better,

Dr. Brown
