Suffering From GERD. Burning In Chest. Sore Taste, Redness In Mouth. Why Is It So?

Hello, My name is Roah Awad and I have acid reflux disease (GERD), I have changed my diet and started to eat less like they recommend. My heartburn is not severe or anything more like light light light light burn in my mid chest and I also have sour taste in my mouth before I begin to eat. How do I know if I have sour tatse because of acid or sour taste can indicate something else? I also have redness in back my mouth I am scared the acid is damaging the back my mouth and maybe I can have (LPR) as well.

Hello Roah,

Gastro esophageal reflux disease, is caused by the reflux of acid from stomach to esophagus due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus.

Management consists of:
1. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.
2. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
3. Medical management- Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, etc. (which prevent acid formation in stomach) Metoclopramide can also be used but it has some side effects on long term usage
4. Surgical treatment- includes Fundoplication, done when medical measures fail.

If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult a Gastroenterologist.
There is no need to worry...you will be fine.
Wish you a good health & speedy recovery.
Thanks & Take care.
