Suffer From Irregular Heart Beat And Shortness Of Breath Even After Taking Verapmil

I suffer from irregular heart beat and shortness of breath. I have been taking Verapamil for many years and it has helped me greatly. Due to recent colostomy surgery (and reversal) I developed hernias on my incision. The side effects (constipation) of Verapmail are causing a strain on my hernias. The doctor tried to cut my dosage of 120g. to 60 mg.and to take with Toporal 25 mg. I had a severe reaction to the lower dose of Verapamil AND the Toporal. I am back on the 120 mg of Verapamil. I cannot have a bowel movement. I am desperate. I am an 86 year old female. My email address is YYYY@YYYY How can I have a bowel movement and stay on Verapamil? I am taking Miralax but it doesn t really work for me. Ducolax suposiories also did not work. I might add, I am extremely sensitive to medications and have been hospitalized numerous times in the past due to side effects. How can I continue to stay on Verapamil and have bowel movements?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello! Thank you for your question! Speaking about your irregular heart beating, it is important to know what kind of arrhythmia it is (do you have any medical report or consultation conclusions?). As there are different types of arrhythmias, also there are different therapy options appropriate for each of them. It is hard to believe that you are in such a condition (presence of co-morbidity) that your doctor insists to continue on verapamil, regardless evident side effects. So please, discuss with your cardiologist for a better option different from verapamil, which has a better pharmacological profile.
If you let me know about specific data of your arrhythmia and your cardiac medical history (including co-morbidity), I could give you concrete recommendation for the therapy.
So to conclude: you should change (your doctor should) verapamil from therapy.
Hope to have been helpful to you.
Greetings. Dr.Iliri
