Started With Terrible Diarrhea. Very Watery. Limited My Food. On Immodium. Colonoscopy No Problem. Suggestions?

I started with terrible diarrhea last Friday...it is the type of diarrhea that is like water and there is no way to hold it making it difficult if a bathroom isn't close. I have been limiting food because I am afraid to eat anything. I take Immodium and that works for about a day and then right back to very liquid stool. I had a colonoscopy in March and everything fine. Have been dx several years ago with IBS because MDs couldn't find any other reason for diarrhea difficulties I have had over the years. What should I do next?

Gastroenterologist 's  Response
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM).

Since you have chronic diarrhoea you need to be evaluated.

You haven't mentioned any alarming features like weight loss, blood in stool, loss of apetitie, anemia. I don't know whether any of them is there or not.
If they are there then you need evaluation and I will advise you to visit a Gastroenterologist who may ask you to undergo some blood tests like complete hemogram, ESR, CRP, stool examination, thyroid profile, tests for wheat allergy and endoscopy and duodenal biopsy.

If alarm features are absent then you may be suffering from IBS-D(diarrhoea predominant). Then you require:
1. Tab Ramisetron which I am using in my patients and find it very useful
2. Take Imodium twice a day
3. See whether milk or milk products worsen your symptoms, if yes then avoid it
4.Combination of pre and probiotic

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. Remain in touch and get-well soon.
