Should A Raised TSH Level Be A Cause For Concern In A Child?

Hello, My son aged 7 years had recovered from hypothyroid couple of years ago after three years of medication since his age 2 years. But lately during routine check we found his TSH levels on 7.72, however T3/T4 level is normal. Can I know whether his current TSH level is alarming and should we start his medication. Or wait for a while and redo the tests to check TSH levels before deciding any course of action. Thanks & Regards,Sumedh

Hello,
Good day.
TSH level cut offs are kept at higher level in kids. Not to worry. At 7 yrs of age, TSH of 7.7 is not that high. Since the T3 and T4 are normal, I would rather wait and repeat his thyroid test after 3 months. But if he is not growing in height compared to class mates, or if lazy or have constipation etc, I might need to investigate further now. If he is growing well, please don't worry
