Received Abnormal Pap Smear Results. Recommended Colposcopy. Is Anesthesia Required During Biopsy?
Hi. I am a 40 year old mother of 4 and have just received abnormal pap smear results, possible high grade. It has been recommended that I get a colposcopy. I am concerned as I have never had abnormal results before. I have to go to hospital for this procedure. If they take a biopsy of the area, does this require an anaesthetic?
Hi! First of all I would like to assure you that abnormal results donot always mean cancer. Donot worry but with abnormal pap smear results it is advisable to go for a colposcopy. It helps in giving a better and clear picture. If there is any abnormal area visualised in colposcopy then a biopsy is done.I advise you to go for a colposcopy and wait for its results. As for anaesthesia most doctors and patients consider it unnecessary ,while some may use topical anaesthesia or cervical block depending on biopsies to be taken.Take care!
