Prescribed Amoxicillin For Wisdom Tooth Infection. Have Swollen Cheek. Extraction Possible?

hi a quick question. today I was prescribed 500 mgs of amoxicillin/claulanic acid 125mgs by my GP to combat a severe infection stemming from my wisdom tooth and now am swollen in my cheek area plus my gums along my upper right left are swollen up into my cheek bone, right by my nose . I went to GP to get anti biotics because my dentist could only give me an earliest appointment in four days. my question is will the anti biotic treat the infection to allow extraction by then? and also should i have the wisdom tooth removed ? ( it is empacted and broken of at one side- happened a week ago)

Hello There,
Thanks for writing in.
First of all,i would like to tell you that wisdom teeth are vestigial organ,if you have problem during their eruption like insufficient space,it will be best to get them removed.
In case of infection in wisdom tooth, antibiotics along with pain killers and multi-vitamins and in case of swelling serratio should be prescribed prior to extraction and should be take atleast 3 days prior to extraction of that tooth.
Mean while you can perform warm saline gargles 3-4 times a day.

Nothing to get worried.
Take Care.

Welcome to HCM. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid 500+125 mg three times a day is a optimum antibiotic to control moderate facial swelling( as your case) from dental infection. As you have four days time left before extraction of your wisdom tooth, it is expected your facial swelling will be controlled in this period. And minor facial swelling (if still present) is not contraindicated for extraction of tooth. Yes, wisdom tooth, which has shown some complications (as it happened in your case) should be extracted to avoid further major complications. Hope, your query is explained. Get well soon.

Hi,

Thanks for aksing the query,

You can savely take Amoxicillin along with clavulanic acid this will surely subside the infection and swelling till the removal of wisdom tooth.
It is necessary to remove the wisdom tooth, i would like to tell you that wisdom tooth does not have any significant role in mastication and occlusion so it is wise to get it removed if it is infected.

Hope you find this as helpful,

Regards.

Hi

Thanks for writing in.

I would like to tell you that wisdom tooth don't have an important role.
Hence if if they cause problem, its better to get it extracted.
Course of amoxiclav-625 along with diclo-serratio-paracetamol combination & multivitamin 3 days before is better in your case.
Also do warm saline rinses 3-4 times a day.
Consult your dentist & get it extracted as early as possible.

Take Care
Regards
Dr.Neha
