General Surgeon 's  Response

Thank you for the query.

Left abdominal pain and elevated WBC indicates diverticulitis. This disease is strongly associated with constipations. So if you have had constipations before, this is very probable. This disease likes to recur, and after two episodes surgery is advisable as such diverticle inflammation can cause intestine perforation. Abdominal CT can not visualize diverticles especially if no oral contrast was given and intestines preparation were performed.
It is advisable in your case to have antibiotics treatment (Ciprofloxacine 500 mg twice a day for 5 days and Metronidazole 500 mg twice a day for 5 days). You should have light diet, drink more water especially in a first few days. After about 3 weeks the colonoscopy should be done (colonoscopy when acute inflammation is present can cause a perforation).

Hope this will help.
