Pain In Hand After Blood Donation, Swelling. X-ray Normal. Taking Naproxen. Applied Ice

I gave whole blood on Wed (5:30 pm). I donate regularly and this time hurt significantly. The phlebotomist mentioned scar tissue . On Thurs my ring finger , on the same side as the donation site, hurt like I had jammed it, but I hadn t. I didn t sleep well Thurs night with my hand hurting and woke up Fri morning with a swollen hand and much pain in the top of my hand and three fingers -middle, ring and pinky. The pain seemed centered at the base of the ring finger and just behind that on my hand. I went to the doctor where they took an x-ray (it presented like a broken bone) but the x-ray showed nothing broken. I have been taking Naproxen and put ice on it but no reduction in the swelling. It is now Sunday and I have not seen any change - still swollen and painful. The back of my hand is also warm to the touch.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The pain at the site of insertion of the needle for blood donation could have caused a mild inflammation in the vein. Doing a cold compress in the area and mild pain killers will help.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
