On thyroid medication. Finger nails are raw and split. Related?

I have been on thyroid medicine for years and believe my dosage is correct and finally stabilized. But for the last 6 - 8 months I have been having a problem with my fingernails. They are raw & split down to the base of the nail and when they due start to grow it is almost like they are dead nails and grow outward. It does seem it is spreading from one nail to now six. I saw a dermatologist they sent a nail sample out only to confirm it is not a fungi but no other help. I am sure this is relation to my thyroid - can you offer any suggestions???
