On Thyroid Medication. Finger Nails Are Raw And Split. Related?
I have been on thyroid medicine for years and believe my dosage is correct and finally stabilized. But for the last 6 - 8 months I have been having a problem with my fingernails.They are raw & split down to the base of the nail and when they due start to grow it is almost like they are dead nails and grow outward. It does seem it is spreading from one nail to now six. I saw a dermatologist they sent a nail sample out only to confirm it is not a fungi but no other help. I am sure this is relation to my thyroid - can you offer any suggestions???

There can be various reasons for brittle nails and it includes....
If you are putting your hand in water frequently
Various types of fungal or bacterial infections
Uncontrolled hypothyroidism and diseases of liver,lungs and kidneys etc.
Deficiency of biotin,VIT A,VIT B 12, VIT C ,VIT D,iron,calcium zinc etc.
Treatment involves. ..
Proper control of thyroid status
Eating a well balanced diet,multivitamins,calcium and iron.
Applying olive oil on finger nails while sleeping
Avoiding acetone.
These general measures should be adopted and must consult some other dermatologist for his opinion.
