Is Sudden Heavy Period And Severe Abdominal Pain Normal Premenopausal Symptoms?

Hello there I had a question regarding my mother's premenopausal symptoms. She is 48 and sometimes misses her periods or has them for only two days or so. And at other times she has extremely heavy periods that last a longer time. But what I mean by heavy is that she would be sitting there then suddenly a massive rush of blood that is so extreme that it soaks up her clothes and at one time, was running down her leg. Today however, the 4th day of her period, she suddenly broke out in intense stomach pain as she did when she was younger -- before she had any children. Is this normal? What concerned me is that she got this pain on her fourth day, as opposing to the first or second day of the period...do you have any advice? Thanks
