Is Severe Pain During Colposcopy And Cervical Biopsies Normal?

My wife recently had a colposcopy &3 cervical boipsies performed. This was supposed to be a painless procedure, but when the biopsies were taken she screamed in pain for all of them. She says it was the worst pain she's ever felt. The doctor did not give anything for pain before the procedure, he said that the cervical mucosa is insensitive to pain. She is by no means a wuss. She said it felt like she was being stabbed. Now i can't get her to return for follow up care. If a procedure is painless & she screams in pain, shouldn't the procedure be stopped. Please help me to under stand why she was put through such a traumatic procedure!
