Is It Dangerous To Have A Shoulder Mass About A Size Of A Soft Ball ?

I have a large mass on my left shoulder about the size of a softball. They have just done a MRI , blood work and 6 x-rays before they will even consider surgery . Am I looking at something serious? Did I let it go to long? My Dr. always said it was just fine for the last few years, I finally said I want it off.
