Is High T4 Sufficient To Be Diagnosed With Hyperthyroidism?

My t4 range was 17.7, my t3 uptake was 20, and my tsh was in the normal range. I have been hyperthyroid in the past, however it went into remission for many years. I had a baby 4 months ago, and ever since I have had every hyperthyroid symptom imaginable! With my bloodwork results only having high t4 is that enough to diagnose hyperthyroidism?

Hi,

Usually in hyperthyroidism T4 is high and TSH is low. But in central hypothyroidism and thyroid hormone resistance (2 extremely rare situations) you can have blood tests in which both are elevated or t4 high and TSH inappropriately normal.

You should consult an endocrinologist who will do technitium thyroid scan and other pituitary hormone work up based on the situation.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help

With warm regards,

Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM)
