Is Xanax A Good Mood Stabilizer?

I was prescribed Xanax for 2.5 years, then my insurance changed and the doctor prescribed me all kinds of mood stabilizers, Seroquel, Lamictal, Topiramate, Hydroxyzpam, Gabapentin and Topamax. All of which did nothing for my anxiety and side effects were brutal. When I was on Xanax, my quality of life was so much better, I could concentrate at work, I could stand in line at the grocery store without having a panic attack. I really need to find a doctor who can help my situation. Can you help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Xanax is a short-acting anxiolytic of benzodiazepine drug class. It is enhancing the calming effects of the brain's natural chemical named GABA.

Apart of its benefits, it's long-time use might cause addiction problems. That's why, to my opinion, your doctor has changed to other anxiolytic drugs.

I understand your worries, but Xanax is not the only solution. Your caring doctor would determine the best drug for you depending on your health condition/symptoms and to avoid addiction.

All the best!
