Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Weight gain in hypothyroidism is common. Thyroid gland releases hormones T3 and T4 that controls our body's metabolism. Lack of thyroid hormone will cause a lower cellular metabolism. This leads to both a lower metabolic rate and slower burning of calories and also fatigue. By products of fatigue are lower activity levels resulting in fewer calories burned and increased consumption of glucose rich foods in an effort to increase energy so excessive tissue and water is deposited in body causing weight gain and swelling.
You can prevent weight gain by taking prompt treatment for hypothyroidism as well as taking balance diet and regular exercise.
Hope it helps.
Take care!

Lilly thanks for your question,
Try to have a healthy lifestyle, which consists of a nutritious diet, regular physical activity , stress management techniques along with prescribed medications is the most important in your condition. A balanced diet consisting of whole-grains such as whole wheat, oats, ragi, brown rice, lean protein like steamed fish, grilled chicken breast, low fat yogurt etc Try to have protein at every meal combined with fruits, vegetables and healthy fats sources may be almonds, avocado, olive oil, canola oil in moderation.try to eat Small frequent meal is throughout the day. drink plenty of water, never skip any meal as skipping meals causes stress and sleep well.
